Video Conferencing – “Using Our Daily Life as Our Spiritual Practice”

TAGS: None

There is always a temptation to regard our Dharma practice as separate from ordinary life: attending talks, meditation courses or sitting for meditation – and the rest of the time spent with our family, friends and job is just worldly activity. In this video Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo makes practical observations and suggestions on how to use our everyday life to enhance our practice no matter who we are with or what we are doing.

Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo was born and raised in London and became a Buddhist while still in her teens. At the age of twenty, she traveled to India, becoming one of the first Westerners to be ordained as a Buddhist nun. After six years of study with her teacher, he sent her to the Himalayan valley of Lahoul to undertake more intensive practice. She lived with a small group of nuns in a monastery there for another six years, doing frequent retreats in the long winter months. Seeking more seclusion and better conditions for practice, Tenzin Palmo found a nearby cave where she stayed and practiced for another twelve years, the last three years in strict retreat. The story of her life and experiences in her remote Himalayan cave is described in the book Cave in the Snow: a Western Woman’s Quest for Enlightenment by Vicki Mackenzie. She left the cave in 1988 and went to stay in Italy where she taught at various Dharma centres.

Deeply concerned with the plight of Buddhist nuns, she established Dongyu Gatsal Ling nunnery in India. In 2008 His Eminence the 12th Gyalwang Drukpa, head of the Drukpa Kagyu lineage, gave her the rare title of Jetsunma (Venerable Master).

We’ll start the video show at 10.00 AM to finish by 11.30AM.

The Seven Limb Practice – for Purification, Accumulation & Blessings

TAGS: None

Choe Khor Sum Ling, a Tibetan Buddhist Meditation & Study Center, is pleased to announce the beginning of a new course – ‘The Seven Limb Practice – for Purification, Accumulation & Blessings’ on Sunday, August 7, 2011.

Most of us, beginners in the pursuit of spiritual progress encounter this problem: when we study but cannot retain the words, contemplate but do not understand, meditate but nothing develops. That is because our feeble mind is said to be like “a field littered with stones, pebbles & weeds”. Before any fruits of transformation or positive qualities in our mind can grow, we need to first do the following to clean up our mind and receive positive conditions:

Purify negativities – to remove the obstructions to change
Accumulate merits – to gather favorable conditions
Seek & receive the guru’s blessings for inspiration

The Seven Limb practice contains all the key practices for preparing our mind to achieve realizations quickly. Other topics covered during the course will include:

Practice of the Confession to 35 Buddhas
Benefits of making offerings
Vajrasattva practice
Mandala Offering

The 3-sessions course will be conducted in English by Ven. Gyalten Rabten from Sera Jey Monastic University. The course is suitable both for beginners and advanced students of Tibetan Buddhism. It is free and open to everyone.

Schedule:
session 1 – Aug 7, 2011, Sun, 10 AM – 1 PM
session 2 – Aug 21, 2011, Sun, 10 AM – 1 PM
session 3 – Sep 18, 2011, Sun, 10 AM – 1 PM

Venue: Choe Khor Sum Ling Center, # 24, 1st floor, 3rd Main St, Domlur Layout 1st stage, Bangalore 560071.
