Two Places to visit inside Bangalore: Devanahalli Fort and Bommanahalli Temple

Must visit 1:

Most of you would have read about how far the new Bangalore International Airport is and how boring the journey is. But have you noticed Fort of Devanahalli on the way to Airport? Its visible from the high way if you are watchful enough. I always wanted explore it but never did. But this time on my regular visit to Nandhi Hills I made sure to stop and visit the Fort.

The fort as such is not very big but looks beautiful and still is in good condition. The fort was built by Mallabairegowda in 1501Continue reading about Devanahalli Fort

Must Visit 2:

This temple is an hidden treasure. People traveling daily on hosur road don’t even know about it. So me and my friend tried to explore it. .

Weekend Drive: Melkote

I was doubtful till the last minute about the weather. Unseasonal rains pouring in and around Bangalore were the main cause for my worries. But thankfully weather was on our side till the last minute. We started quite early reaching the Kamat Lokruchi by 9. Our target was to reach Melkote by 10, which we achieved.

It is built on rocky hills known as Yadavagiri or Yadugiri overlooking the Cauvery valley. It is about 30 miles from Mysore and 97 miles from Bangalore.

Good time to Visit Ranganatittu

Ranganatittu is an outstanding bird sanctuary near mysore ( map of Bangalore to Ranganatittu). The water out of KRS forms tiny islands around 12 kms outside Mysore and these islands are the main breeding spot for birds. This Sunday morning we drove to Ranganatittu to shoot some birds. Here are some pictures from that photo shoot

I used regular Sony camera with 12x optical zoom. All the pictures were shot in sport mode. I am not sure if SLR would have made any difference. Read the rest

Weekend Drive: Sravanabelagola

Sravanabelagola is proper weekend drive from Bangalore. Its around four hours drive from Bangalore.Catch the road which goes to Hassan and once you reach Hassan you can catch the road to Sravanabelagola. Its nearly 180 Kms from Bangalore. The map is given below.

From wikipedia
Shravanabelagola is a city located in the Hassan district, in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is one of the most important Jain pilgrim centers. In Kannada language, ‘Bel’ means white and ‘kola’, the pond, an allusion to the beautiful pond in the middle of the town.

There are two hills Chandragiri and Vindyagiri. The last shruta-kevali Bhadrabah and his pupil Chandragupta (formerly the Maurya king) had meditated there. Chandragiri has memorials to numerous monks and shravakas who have meditated there, since 5th cent CE, including the last king of the Rashtrakuta dynasty of Manyakheta. Chandragiri also has a famous temple built by Chamundaraya, who was a disciple of Acharya Nemichandra Siddhanta-chakravarti.

The Vindhyagiri hill is home to a thousand year-old gigantic 17.38 meter high monolithic stone statue of the Bhagavan Gomateshwara Bahubali, considered to be the world’s largest, built by Chamundaraya, a general of king Gangaraya. The base of the statue has inscriptions in Kannada, Tamil and the oldest evidence of written Marathi said to be from 981AD. The inscription concerns the king Gangaraya who funded the effort, and his general Chamundaraya, who erected the statue for the king. Every 12 years, thousands of devotees congregate here to perform the Mahamastakabhisheka, a spectacular ceremony where the thousand-year-old statue is anointed with milk, curds, ghee, saffron and gold coins. The next Mahamastakabhisheka will be held in 2018 A.D.

Travel Plan: Leave Bangalore early may be around 5 or 6 am. Have the breakfast somewhere in between on the road to Hassan. Go watch gommateshwara. And other basadi. If you are willing to drive more go to Beluru and Halebidu (I will cover next time). Dont forget to take your camera.

Weekend drive: Shivanasamudra

Note: Weekend-drive is a new category where we will try to give you details about tourist attractions which you can visit during the weekend. I will try to keep in mind ‘weekend’ when choosing the places for your visit. I hope this will be an interesting effort. I hope Bangalorean’s will enjoy it.

Shivanasamudra (or Shivasamudram) is a small town in southern Karnataka, India near Mysore. The town is situated in in Malavalli taluk, Mandya District.

Waterfalls

Near the town is the famous Shivanasamudram (also known as the Siva Samudram, literally meaning Shiva’s Sea) waterfall. The Kaveri River splits here into two branches and each branch cascades down rocky cliffs. The more popularly viewed cascade is known as Gaganachukki and the other cascade is known as Bharachukki. These spectacular waterfalls are surrounded by hill forests of the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Gaganachukki is 98 m tall, and has a maximum recorded flow of 667,000 cubic feet per sec. One of Asia’s oldest hydro-electric power stations, still functional, is located at the waterfall. This is where hydel power was first harnessed in Asia and the electricity thus produced was used in the Gold Mines of Kolar and thus Kolar Gold Fields became the first city in Asia to get electricity. One can view these waterfalls from the Hydel Power viewing end or the Dargah end. The Gaganachukki itself has 2 facades, the western facade and the eastern facade. Many enthusiastic youngsters trek down the hill side towards the cascade and enjoy the water spray. One can ask the locals for directions to the Dargah and view the upstream end of the falls. The upstream is particularly awe inspiring after the monsoons when the Kaveri River is full.

The Barachukki is about a kilometer away from the Dargah. Barachukki has a wider cascading edge. One section resembles a ‘u’ section, like the Niagara Falls. It also has nice graceful cascade along the side. There are much fewer visitors to this falls and there is no viewing gallery construction here.

How to reach?

From Bangalore: There are 2 routes.
a) You can take Mysore Road, cross Mandya, take diversion for Maddur and drive straight towards Malavalli. After Malavalli, you can ask any local and he can guide you correctly. You can also return via the same route. This route has good roads and you can enjoy the new Bangalore-Mysore Expressway too.
b) Alternatively, you can take the National Highway that passes through Kanakapura. Drive straight upto Malavalli and then you can ask any local villager for directions. They will tell you the exact route. (This is the route that you would take to reach Bheemeshwari Fishing Resort).
Total distance: 140 km.
Best time to visit: September to February.

Video: From google video by Balaji

Note: The details are taken from wikipedia and other sources. Credits are given where ever its possible.
