‘Introduction to Buddhist psychology: Mind & Mental Factors’, a new weekend course starts at CKSL on June 26, 2011

Choe Khor Sum Ling Centre, a Tibetan Buddhist Meditation & Study Centre, is pleased to announce the beginning of a new weekend course – ’Introduction to Buddhist psychology: Mind & Mental Factors’ on June 26, 2011.

The great Tibetan master Gon-pa-wa said, “To eliminate disturbing emotions, you must know their faults, their characteristics, their remedies, and the causes for their arising. Once you know the root and secondary afflictions, then when any attachment, hostility, or such arises in your mind-stream, you can identify it thinking , “this is that, now it has arisen – and fight the disturbing emotion.”
The course is based on a text written by the great 18th century Tibetan master Kachen Yeshe Gyeltsen, following Abhidharma tradition of Buddhist thought. It will provide a detailed overview of the mind and the various virtuous and non-virtuous mental and emotional states that color and control it, which are known as the 51 mental factors. It will offer a practical guide on how to cultivate virtuous mental states and how to weaken and eventually abandon the disturbing emotions, the key to lasting peace and well-being.
The course will be conducted by English-speaking monks from Sera Jey Monastic University ~biweekly on Sunday afternoons from 4 PM to 6 PM.
The course is free and open to everyone. It is suitable for beginners as well as advanced students of Tibetan Buddhism.

Essence of Buddhism & Wisdom Empowerment, a special teaching by Jangtse Choje Rinpoche at CKSL

Choe Khor Sum Ling, a Tibetan Buddhist Meditation & Study Centre, cordially invites everyone to a very special event, a teaching by Jangtse Choje Rinpoche Lobsang Tenzin on “The Foundation of All Good Qualities” and a Wisdom Empowerment on June 19, Sunday.

The meditation practice of Manjushri, the Buddha of Wisdom, is one of the most powerful methods to increase one’s wisdom, an essential quality on the path to spiritual enlightenment. In order to fully engage in Manjushri meditation practice, one first requires initiation from a qualified master to receive blessings of the unbroken lineage of the realized practitioners.
As a preliminary teaching to the initiation, Jangtse Choje Rinpoche will give a commentary on Lama Tsongkhapa’s “The Foundation of all the Good Qualities,” a concise text that contains all the essential points of Buddhism. The commentary will include explanations of the nature of samsara and nirvana, compassion, and the ultimate nature of reality.

Jangtse Choje Rinpoche Lobsang Tenzin holds the second highest position in the Tibetan Buddhist Gelug Tradition. Rinpoche is one of the most respected teachers in this tradition who served as an abbot of Gyume monastery, now located in Hunsur district of Karnataka. Rinpoche is renowned as a great scholar and is called upon to teach in many places in North America, Europe and Asia. Aware of his profound qualities, His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama requested that Rinpoche maintain his permanent residence at Sera Jey Monastic University in Karnataka, to serve as one of the principal teachers to bring forth the new generation of scholars-practitioners.
Rinpoche is a very special teacher, a great scholar and a very humble person, highly respected by HH the Dalai Lama and loved by his students who affectionately call him Gen Drubtop la – a teacher who has attained realizations.

The preliminary teaching is open to all. Those taking the initiation should have faith and respect in the guru conferring the initiation and have a basic understanding of Buddhist teachings. The commitment for receiving the initiation is refuge and Bodhisattva vows. Participants should avoid eating meat, eggs, onions and garlic the day of the initiation.

Choe Khor Sum Ling, a Tibetan Buddhist Meditation & Study Centre, is organizing a very special event: on September 8-10, 2010, Geshe Dorji Damdul will give a teaching on the most profound concept of the Buddhist philosophy – Emptiness & Interdependent Arising.
Over three evenings Geshe Dorji Damdul will give teachings on interdependent-arising and emptiness, the true nature of reality. Geshe la will explain how by seeing the ultimate reality of all existence one can attain freedom from the sufferings of samsara.
These teachings will be based on the 24^th chapter of The Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way (Mulamadhyamakakarika) composed by Arya Nagarjuna, one of the foremost scholars of ancient Nalanda University. In this text Nagarjuna playfully shows the absurdities that we fall into if we interpret emptiness as meaning nothingness, or reject emptiness in favor of permanence.
Geshe Dorji Damdul is one of the official translators of His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama. He is a popular and respected teacher, particularly for his teachings on emptiness, a distinguished Buddhist scholar, whose interest lies in the relation between Buddhism and science, especially in physics. Geshe la has participated in several of the renowned conferences entailing dialogues between His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama and western scientists organized by Mind and Life Institute.
Currently Geshe la serves as a Deputy Director of Tibet House, New Delhi, where he gives lectures and leads philosophy classes and meditation retreats. Geshe la travels widely in India and abroad to teach Buddhist philosophy and practice.

‘The Buddhist Way of Living’ by Venerable Khangser Rinpoche

On Independence Day CKSL is organizing a special introductory teaching on the basics of Buddhism: Venerable Khangser Rinpoche will explain why Buddhism is considered to be a Way of Living rather than a religious dogma. This will be followed by initiation into meditation practice of Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion.

Unique Identification Number Project (UID)and the Indian Citizen

The UID (Unique Identity) project is one of the most ambitious projects of the UPA government. The move to set up the UID Authority of India (UIDAI), under the aegis of the Planning Commission, is aimed at providing a unique identity to the targeted population of the flagship schemes to ensure that the benefits reach them. The unique identification number would ensure that any lacuna in these schemes is removed so that the benefits do not reach those they are not meant for.

Karnataka has reportedly been chosen as the pilot state to implement the project. The National Authority for Unique Identity (NAUI), set up under the Planning Commission, has asked the state to implement the programme on a small scale to co-ordinate data on people, from different agencies.

Bangalore is set to become a hub of activities for the Unique Identification Authority of India as Karnataka has been chosen as one of the states where the project, led by Infosys co-founder Mr. Nandan Nilekani, will be implemented first.

‘The Bodhisattva’s Jewel Garland (Bodhisattva-manyavali) is a poem written by Atisha Sri Dipamkara-jnana, one of the greatest pandits of the ancient Nalanda University. The poem is an essential instruction on how to achieve the perfection of our own and other’s wellbeing by making simple yet profound changes in the way we think and see things around us.
Based on it, Venerable Khangser Rinpoche will explain how every moment and every action of one’s life can become meaningful and joyful, more imbued with wisdom.
Rinpoche is a renowned teacher from Sera Jey Monastic University, at the young age of 33 he is one of the foremost Buddhist scholars and practitioners of our time.
