Theatre, Nature and I

This workshop takes children on a journey that sensitizes them to Nature. They will be exposed to true environmental stories of triumph. The workshop endeavours to enable children to translate environmental awareness into theatrical expressions.

Puppetry Workshop

As David Logan said, “The marvellous thrill of puppetry is that puppets by their very nature do things that are not humanly possible. This allows for the imagination to explore countless different possibilities.”

This workshop takes children through the process of creating a puppet, a character, giving a voice and a personality too. Children would be exposed to a cultural experience of telling a story through puppet theatre.

About Padmavati Rao

Padmavati Rao has anchored Ranga Shankara’s Summer Express since its inception. Extremely popular (and hence sold out within a couple of days!), Pinty Akka as she is known, works with children to help them discover themselves and their creative sides in the most fond manner. She has designed these two brand new workshops for children between 7 and 9 years of age for Summer Express 2009.

Padmavati is very actively involved with Theatre in Education and works for an educational institution in Bangalore. She is very well known for her translations (Girish Karnad’s “Bikhre Bimb” and others), and plays for children that she has directed (“Gumma Banda Gumma” and “The First Leaf”). She was Shankar Nag’s Assistant Director for Malgudi Days and has acted in several movies in Hindi and Kannada.

How does the universe of the arts intersect our lives? How do we comprehend its special energy?

From being a plaything of the elites or of market forces, does it constitute an autonomous agency, whose insights can transform our lives?

Is it possible to conceptualise art and life as undifferentiated so that life itself becomes an extended artistic assertion?

How do artists conceptualise their work and what are the inspirations that inform their creative productions?

What is the special place that the arts and artists occupy in our consiousness and our awareness of life and society?

It is important to see the contiguity of diverse artistic expressions to understand the synergy and flow of a common force between distinct expressive media in the arts.

Keeping in mind the overall theme of the Ranga Shankara Theatre Festival of ‘Company Theatre’, the ‘art appreciation’ package has been put together with the idea of getting an insight into how a certain kind of theatrical expression in the early twentieth century helped lay the foundations for the Bombay/ Bollywood cinema and a certain ‘tradition’ of musical concert format, and the construction of a distinct ‘popular’ visual lexicon.

Beyond that, it will have intimate moments when artists and analysts share their formation and their insight with the participants.

Most resource persons/presenters have been requested to trace a personal journey to facilitate the possibility of the participants entering their life and practice in a creative way and getting an exposure to concepts in arts and art history without tears.

The six days will include, besides seeing three plays, a chance to get face-to-face with a range of distinguished personalities, as the schedule of the programme will make self-evident.

Here’s hoping the participants will bring as much to the six days as they will take from it.

Sadanand Menon is a nationally reputed ‘arts editor’, popular teacher of ‘cultural journalism’, widely published photographer, arts curator and prolific writer and speaker at seminars on politics, ecology and the arts.
He is currently Adjunct Faculty at the Asian College of Journalism, Chennai, where he conducts courses on ‘Arts & Culture Journalism’ and ‘Photojournalism’.
He is member, committee to restructure the National School of Drama, Delhi; member, Board of Governors, Indian Institute of Advance Study, Shimla, member, Governing Council, Lalit Kala Akademi, Delhi and Managing Trustee, SPACES, An Arts Foundation, Chennai.
A former Arts Editor with India’s leading financial daily The Economic Times, he has practiced and taught critical alternatives in the media, and edited interventionist journals. He writes a weekly column in ‘Malayalam’, the leading Malayalam language periodical from the Indian Express stable, Kochi, and a fortnightly column for ‘Business Standard’.
He conceptualised and edited the first ever ‘weekly page’ on modern design in mainstream Indian media, in The Economic Times. He also helped devise a foundational course in ‘Design & Design Concepts’ for senior students of ‘The School’, Chennai, of the Krishnamurthy Foundation of India.
Several exhibitions he has curated, includes a major fifty-years retrospective of Dashrath Patel for the National Gallery of Modern Art , in New Delhi and Mumbai. He has contributed several catalogue pieces for artists, ceramists, photographers.
His photographic works have been included in anthologies of the best photographic work from India and he is currently Editorial Advisor, ‘Better Photography’, Mumbai, in which he also writes a regular monthly column.
A long-time collaborator with Chandralekha, he is deeply involved with issues connected with the creation of a contemporary Indian dance and has travelled extensively in India and abroad as the technical director of Chandralekha’s performances. In 2001, he coordinated, for Sangeet Natak Akademi, Delhi, the first international symposium and workshop in India on ‘Light and Movement’.
He has convened several national-level seminars and round-tables, including a national symposium on ‘Emerging Issues in the Media’ for Media Development Foundation, Chennai, 2003, which brought together 30 of the most important proprietors, editors, columnists and scholars in the Indian media.

Arundhati Nag, Creative Director of Ranga Shankara and K. Sankara Narayanan, CEO Vodafone Essar South Ltd., along with Girish Karnad, Playwright and Chairperson of the Sanket Trust today announced the Ranga Shankara Theatre Festival ’08. The ten-day theatre extravaganza between 31 Oct and 09 Nov will celebrate the Golden Period of Indian Theatre that spanned over a century.

This year the Ranga Shankara Theatre Festival (in association with Vodafone) will pay tribute to the Company Theatre, which dominated the Indian stage in the early part of the 20th century. Company Theatre, which celebrated theatricality and was best known for its spectacular quality, emerged as the country’s first modern commercial theatre and created what was perhaps the largest ticket-buying audience in Indian stage history. This theatrical style was greatly influenced by Parsi theatre, Marathi Sangeet Natak and several local performance traditions.
Ranga Shankara (in association with Vodafone) proudly announces two commissioned plays at this year’s Festival, Jagajyoti Basaveshwara and Sadarame. The doyen of Company Nataka, Sri. Yenagi Balappa will return to the stage as Haralayya in our revival of Jagajyoti Basaveshwara. His son Yenagi Nataraj will direct the play, whose cast includes Prakash Garud of Garuda Sadasivarao’s Dattatreya Sangita Nataka Mandali.
B. Jayashree will direct her grandfather Gubbi Veeranna’s successful production Sadarame and will herself don the role of Kalla, synonymous with Veeranna, the single-most famous figure in Company Theatre.
The Festival opens with Theatre and Television Associates (New Delhi) performing Amal Allana’s “Nati Binodini” (in Hindi), which has been praised for its exquisitely devised use of five female actors to represent the protagonist Binodini, the multiplicity enhancing the pace of the play and its visual interest.
Theatre Academy, Pune will present Satish Alekar’s “Begum Barve,” a powerfully haunting play, in which dreams and fantasy inevitably turn into nightmares while Bharat Natya Samshodhan Mandir’s production “Katiaar Kaaljaat Ghusli” musically narrates the rivalry between two classical music gharanas.
Ranga Shankara is delighted to present to Bangalore audiences the magic of Surabhi Company from Andhra Pradesh (established in 1885) with their acclaimed mythological, “Maya Bazaar” known for its spectacular special effects on stage including the descent of Narada on Earth and flying ladoos that land in the mouth of the hungry Ghatodgaja!
The Journey of Kannada Sangeet Natak through its Music will narrate the history of 70 years of the Kannada theatre through its music. Conceptualised and directed by Y.K. Muddukrishna, the musical will feature singers from the Company tradition with music by the veteran R. Paramasivaiah.

Three doyens of the Company era will return to the stage at this year’s festival. R.Nagarathnamma, Master Hirannaiah and Sarita Joshi present an evening of powerful solo performances from their heydays.

Fest ‘08 will mark the second edition of a very special Ancillary Program, Ranga Shankara’s Theatre and Arts Appreciation Course, spearheaded this year by the renowned culture critic Sadanand Menon. Spread over six days during Fest ‘08, the Course will examine and discuss theatre, cinema, dance, photography and music through lectures, film screenings, plays, as well as interaction with directors and actors.

As part of its continuing efforts to make photography an integral part of theatre, Ranga Shankara is mounting a visual narrative of the Golden Period of Indian Theatre with rare archival photographs of Company Nataka in Karnataka, Sangeet Natak in Maharashtra, Parsi Theatre and Bengal Theatre.

A series of films will showcase public and travelling theatre from across the country and the world.

The Ranga Shankara Theatre Festival ‘08 will include the second edition of its very successful Theatre and Arts Appreciation Course, designed on the lines of the well-known Culture Course at Neenasam, Heggodu.

The Course, launched at the Ranga Shankara Theatre Festival ‘07, provides a unique opportunity to learn the essence of theatre and arts appreciation by developing new ways “seeing and listening”. Last year’s course was a resounding success, with participants from various walks of life – from students to professors, software professionals to bankers – participating enthusiastically in the highly interactive sessions. The likes of Satyadev Dubey, Girish Karnad, UR Anantamurthy, Ratan Thiyam, KV Akshara and Prakash Belwadi spent time with the participants discussing their craft.

Renowned culture critic Sadanand Menon will spearhead the Theatre and Arts Appreciation Course ‘08. A well-known writer on critical issues of politics and culture, Sadanand Menon is also a photographer and stage light designer. He has served as the Arts Editor for The Economic Times.

The Course will examine and discuss theatre, cinema, dance, photography and music over six days (spread over two weekends during Rs Fest ‘08) through lectures, film screenings, plays, as well as interaction with directors and actors. The Course will thus look at, and analyse the formal structures of various works of art as well as consider them in the context of the historical period and cultural framework in which they were produced.

The course fee is Rs. 2000 (for six days; the fee includes lectures, film screenings and tickets to plays). A discount of Rs.1000 is being offered to students.

Alarms & Excursions, by Michael Frayn, Britain’s most tongue-in-cheek playwright is dark, farcical and comic. The play comprises of three short playlets that share a central theme: a critical commentary on miscommunication between people in our supposed era of instant communication and constant contact.

The first playlet “Doubles” involves two couples who check into identical hotel rooms next to each other. In their boxed out rooms that are mirror images of each other we slowly discover that the only thing that eventually separates them is the over-thin walls between their rooms.
The second playlet “Alarms” involves an intimate dinner party where the gadget-happy hosts have invited their close friends to dinner. In a true blue ‘when gadgets attack’ style, all electrical devices in the house go wrong one after the other. A classic farce!
The play ends with “Immobiles,” a screamingly nightmarish romp created due to lack of mobile phones. Broken bones and broken hearts are the result of this techno faux pas.

> About Dramanon :
Dramanon was founded in 1991 and originally comprised faculty members and students of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) who shared a passion for theatre. A few student alumni of Dramanon, Manipal who are now currently full-time professionals, helped Dramanon spread its wings by establishing chapters in Bangalore & Hyderabad. Dramanon Bangalore has recently staged – “The Original Last Wish Baby” a hilarious satire on pop culture and sensationalism in modern-day society, quickly followed by “Pizzazz” – a comedy on relationships by Hugh Leonard in Alliance Francaise and Rangashankara in October and December 2007 and May 2008.

Vincentio, the duke of Vienna is troubled by having to work with outdated and severe laws against unchaste behaviour when they seem in conflict with his own sense of mercy. He announces that he’s going on a long trip and leaves his deputy Angelo in charge. The Duke actually disguises himself and sticks around to see what happens in his absence.
Angelo, a hard-liner, and a person with a conservative outlook cracks down on the city; one of his first acts is to condemn to death a young man named Claudio for having premarital sex with his fiancee. Claudio’s sister, Isabella, who is about to enter a convent and become a nun, comes before Angelo to plead for her brother’s life. Looking at Isabella, Angelo is charmed by her beauty and finds himself filled with lust for Isabella and in an act of great hypocrisy, he tries to blackmail the girl into sexual favours in return for her brother’s life.
Appalled, Isabella refuses to sacrifice her chastity, pleads helplessness with her brother and asks him to prepare for the execution. Her brother agrees at first but then changes his mind and insists that she conduct herself as Angelo desired and save his life. Isabella is left to contemplate a very important decision.
The duke who is dressed as a friar and who is aware of all the happenings intervenes cleverly. He tells her that Angelo’s former lover, Mariana who was engaged to be married to him (Angelo) was abandoned by him when she lost her dowry in a shipwreck. The Duke hatches a plan in which Isabella will agree to succumb to the lust of Angelo, but then Mariana will go in her place. He presumes and hopes that by doing so, Angelo will pardon Claudio and be forced to marry Mariana according to the law.
Everything goes according to plan, except that Angelo does not pardon Claudio, fearing revenge. He insists on getting Claudio executed. The provost in charge of the execution and the Duke send him the head of a dead pirate, claiming that it belonged to Claudio, and Angelo believes that his orders were carried out. Isabella is told that her brother is dead, and that she should submit a complaint to the Duke, who is due to arrive shortly, accusing Angelo of immoral acts.
At this juncture, the Duke returns in his usual clothes. Isabella tells her story, and the Duke pretends not to believe her. Eventually, the Duke reveals his dual identity, and everyone is forced to be honest. Angelo confesses to his misdeeds, Claudio is pardoned, and the Duke asks Isabella to marry him.
