Proto.in 09 in Bangalore

TAGS: None

After its resounding successes in its past four editions, Proto.in is back on 23 & 24 january at bangalore to further strengthen its position as India’s premier start-up event. Proto.in has built a reputation of being the one event the entire entrepreneurial ecosystem looks forward to, across the length and breadth of India. Having witnessed successful past editions in Delhi and Chennai and gearing up for the next one in Bangalore, Ravi Narayan, Managing Director of Mentor Partners, and an advisor to proto.in, believes “proto.in is poised to become a nationwide phenomenon.”

Proto.in – A Binding force within the Start-up Community

Over the last four editions, proto.in has showcased over 75 startups of whom many have leveraged the platform to close funding, develop new business opportunities, create media traction and even connect with potential hires. And as Alok Mittal, one of most successful internet entrepreneurs and a leading venture capitalist in india, says “Proto.in has emerged as an integral part of the Indian startup ecosystem.”

The last edition of Proto.in at India’s capital city played host to the 15 most exciting startups in the country amidst an audience that included the most prominent venture capital firms and angel investors to the who’s who in the technology and media circles. Amit Somani, Head of Mobile Products for Google APAC and a distinguished delegate at the last edition, believes that proto.in will be known as one of the pioneers for helping technology entrepreneurs get started in India in years to come.

The last event also saw a slew of new activities that churned out the most innovative ideas amidst a bunch of hyper enthusiastic entrepreneurs. Guess what, its only going to get better (and wackier) this edition.

What’s Special this proto.in?

Apart from the most anticipated Proto.in showcase of india’s top 15 product startups, the fifth edition of proto.in is breaking new ground by letting the audience experiment with entrepreneurship, through a set of globally unique activities for a technology conference under our exciting new initiative – Proto.in Labs.

Proto.in Labs will play host to a set of activities that will engage the crowd like no other indian conference has attempted before. Here’s a sneak peak into the exciting set of activities you’ll experience as an audience in this edition of proto.in:

Shotgun Startups – Teams of technologists, programmers, designers, and product architects compete with each other to build a product in 24 hours, and get them voted by the audience at Proto.in, with one emerging as the winner.

Pitchcamp! – The first pitch that you make, be it an investor, partner, employee or client about what you do, makes all the difference to that first impression. Pitchcamp will be a workshop for startups to help them sculpt their pitch that will sell every time.

Innovation Jam – Ideation is a simpler process. With the success of the process that started last time, at this proto.in, here’s a chance for the entire audience to participate, in chipping and brewing fresh ideas off of their head. If you have a creative block, this will ensure that its flushed out.

Proto.in Conversations – we are not alone. We are a community of entrepreneurs and some of us have tread this path before us, and have valuable experience to share. Listen from fellow entrepreneurs and get that dose of reality driven into yourself on everything from funding to hiring.

Startup Job board – Sometimes, old school works. If you are a startup and looking for people, put up a post. If you are a professional and looking for a job in an exciting startup, take a card and give them a call. Make it happen, when the entrepreneurial energy is flowing all around you.

Be There!

Add to that, an invite only dinner and a startup mixer on both nights to network and meet others in the space.Make no mistake, Proto.in 5th edition is ‘THE’ place to be, if you want to spruce up your entrepreneurship journey.

Startup nominations are closing on December 16. Hurry up!
Event registration opens on December 15.

11/19/2008 K-Community Event for the month, hosted by IBM

TAGS: None

Date: 11/19/2008 – 11/19/2008
Time: 6:00 PM
Place: IBM Bangalore – India
Description:
6:00pm – 6:15pm Networking/Introductions
6:15pm – 6:30pm Welcome address by Host: David H. Tai, Director, IBM
6:30pm – 7:45pm Talk: “Social Software based Knowledge Management” by Ashok Krish,
Head, TCS Innovation Lab – Web 2.0
7:45pm – 8:00pm Wrapup & conclusion

Talk Description
Conventional Knowledge Management systems in enterprises have very poor adoption rates. In a lot of cases, they have, more often that not, devolved into large, hard-to-manage repositories of documents with little or no abilities to filter good from bad content. We will explore the reasons for the failure of traditional Enterprise KM and suggest an alternative model based on the adoption of KM patterns from consumer Web 2.0 trends, specifically the use of Social software as a KM catalyst. A case study based on the adoption and success of social platforms in the authors’ own organization is presented to justify the suggested KM model.

Speaker Background

Ashok Krish is the head of the TCS Web 2.0 Innovation labs and has over 9 years of experience in TCS. Prior to heading the lab, he was a J2EE Solution Architect for several large TCS customers in the financial services space and comes with a background in SOA and Enterprise architecture. His passion for social computing eventually drove him towards the TCS R&D space where he now focusses on building TCS capabilities in the Web 2.0 space. His current area of R&D is in Enterprise Web 2.0, specifically in the area of KM 2.0 and enterprise collaboration platforms using Web 2.0 tools inside the enterprise.

He is a classically trained violinist and self-taught rock guitarist apart from being a science-fiction and fantasy buff. He also blogs incessantly at krishashok.wordpress.com

David H. Tai is Director of IBM Asia Pacific Learning, Diversity, and Workforce Programs. He is responsible for an integrated talent management strategy for over 115,000 employees in Asia Pacific. He is an expert in learning design and development with a specialization in leadership development. In the past 20 years of his journey in the learning industry, he has had the opportunity to create IBM’s first Web based learning systems, IBM’s first e-learning solution: e-business Primer, IBM’s first Web based authoring tool, IBM’s first On Demand Learning solution in leadership development, IBM’s first 3D virtual learning game: SalesQuest, and IBM’s 1st e-mail based learning solution: Mailcast. Harald Welte, noted Linux kernel hacker (netfilter/iptables), GPL enforcer (gpl-violations.org), embedded Linux wizard (Openmoko) and techno-blogger, will be this year’s opening keynote speaker.

This may come as a surprise to some people – because FOSS.IN has the tradition of “a well known contributor, and must be Indian”. When we discussed possible names during a Team FOSS.IN meeting, Harald’s name came up unanimously!

Harald has been a fixture at every one of our annual events since 2003, and has been in India several times a year since then, sees more Bollywood movies than the average Indian each month, is a fan of Sharukh Khan, thrives on Indian food, and when asked by a passport officer why he comes to India so often, famously answered “Mera Dil Hai Hindustani!” (”My Heart is Indian”) – reflecting his close familiarity with Indian movies. :)

Known for his awesome reverse-engineering skills, he likes to curl up with a good book – in his case more likely a heavy GSM protocol reference manual than a novel. His irc nick, “laforge”, betrays his Star Trek fan roots, but his server hostnames, such as ganesha, varuna, etc., give away where his heart really lies.

He will set the tone of our über-technical conference with his keynote: “How to do embedded Linux right”.
