Hoos Tales 2010- International Story Telling Carnival for Kids

“It is our task to set the stories free from the books and bring them to life again”
What
Jorg Baesecke, Hedwig Rost – storytellers.
Even if the line is borrowed the intent is the same. What better way to get that book into a child’s hand by revealing the myriad tales that lie with the covers of books!
A trip into the magical world that books can open up to children.
HOW
A day long festival of tales by artistes from India and abroad. Storytelling styles that go from traditional to puppetry, mime, kamishibai, Yakshagana, thudumbattam, theatre…
In Bengaluru, 2008 & 2009 saw at least 2500 children and about 30 performances each. The venue was a large park and there was a story beginning every 5- 10 minutes. Through the day, children walked in and listened to all the stories they wanted.

In Chennai, there were fixed performances with separate shows for schools during the day and for the general public in the evening. Atleast 1000 children participated in the event.
The 3rd edition of HOO’s Tales is here and will host storytellers and performers from the UK, Germany, New Delhi & Chennai.

Where
The 3rd edition of HOO’s Tales is scheduled for February 20th to 27th in Bengaluru & Chennai.

With storytellers and performers from the UK, Germany, New Delhi & Chennai, the festival opens with our day-long carnival at Bal Bhavan on February 20, 2010. Through the week, it will host workshops for teachers, parents, children, school shows and public performances at venues across the city.

Besides taking story tellers to schools, we have performances in:

Bengaluru:
Indian Institute of World Culture, RV Dental College Auditorium,
Alliance Francaise de Bangalore
Between 20th and 27th of February.

A brief, joyous break for kids before they go headlong into their final examinations. We believe this little time away from studies can only refresh their minds for the weeks of studies up ahead.

The dates for Bengaluru are 20th-24th February, and Chennai between 25th-27th February.
We hope to reach about 14,000 children across both the cities.

Chennai:
Smt. Sivagami Pethachi Auditorium, Russian Cultural Centre, Nageswara Rao Park
The festival ends in Chennai on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at the Nageswara Rao Park in Chennai with a 3-hour long event that will also see performances by local artistes

Star Party at Coorg

First Star Party of the season! Yet another one in Coorg, with memories still afresh from January this year, We revisit Coorg and it’s stunning skies for a fun-filled trip followed up with a Star Party by the night.

Date and Location

Departing Bangalore late evening on Friday, 20th Nov 2009 && Returning on Sunday Evening, 22nd Nov 2009. The location is a fairly remote place called Keemalee Estate, at an even more obscure place called Karada in the proximity of somavarapETe in the Coorg / koDagu district. The overall distance is around 250KM, Ex-Bangalore.

Boarding + Food Facilities

We expect to stay in Dorms mostly. There’s also a nearby hilltop that we’re told is accessible. In case this fits what it takes us to keep scopes there, Then it’ll be tents for the night. Food (3 meals) will be arranged and is part of the estimated trip cost.

Agenda

We expect the skies to be clear and the night is dedicated for a fun-filled, educative star party. We’ll point constellations, planets and finally observe deep sky objects before we conclude the session with an interactive trivia round from an amateur astronomer perspective. The point of leaving on a friday night is to reach the venue by morning, in turn as to keep the day free for rest or activities around the venue. There’s scope for trekking / nature walks around the venue which lies in the thickly forested western ghats of Coorg.

Who can come?

Anybody, so long as we have place to fit you in. We normally organize transport to go together, so there’s a constraint of seats as far as that goes. Ofcourse, by anybody, we meant people interested or fascinated by Astronomy. Please feel free to welcome like-minded friends or family along. Kids are welcome!

Clearing the Air

a) These trips are not-for-profit. We have no commercial intentions with venues we choose or services we hire.

b) Prices are indicative only. The actual cost might be higher or lower. We provide transparent accounts at the conclusion of each event.

c) Differential prices for non-members go to cover or subsidize the costs of coordinators, volunteers, students and operational costs. Excesses are turned back to the owners.

d) Astronomy apart, these programs are intended to encourage networking amongst hobby partners. Participants are generally welcomed to graduate to BAS volunteers or take part in serious observing sessions after these.

e) Astronomy (Observing) is subjected to weather conditions. We don’t believe in weather estimates, but we try to choose a day around the new moon weekend when we expect it to stay clear. We’ve had star parties washed out before. Weather is a reality!

f) Destinations / Venues chosen are done so with an emphasis on alternative activities, particularly outdoor ones so that they serve as a fallback option in case the weather plays spoilsport.

g) Sometimes, we have to switch venues. We normally tell you as soon as we know. We don’t do this unless we really need to.

h) Sometimes, we need to call the trip off (Maybe because we couldn’t find enough people to work the logistics out, or other reasons). We’ll keep you informed if such a thing happens.

i) We organize star parties, not tours. We don’t claim to be specialists in organizing logistics. Please don’t blame us if we are clumsy at times (Hey, we’ve done this many times before. But it happens on rare occasions).

j) We don’t take responsibility for infants, children, loss of belongings, equipment or any such. You’re on your own.

k) We expect you to stay in healthy spirits by not indulging in Alcohol or Smoking.

l) We expect you to be in your most socially pleasant behavior while with us!

m) Above all, We want you to have a fun-filled dose of Astronomy!

“If parents cannot become their children’s leader, motivator, inspiration and his/ her closest friend … somebody else will. And this is the beginning of conflict, distancing and arrogance in a child.”

The workshop is based on science and philosophy. The course technique would be to teach through a continuous series of psychological games, physical games, theatre exercises, theatre arts such as painting, music, masks, etc. so that the parents participate in mind, body and spirit to understand the workshop and apply it.

Neeraj Kabi and the Parents’ Workshop

Every year, Neeraj Kabi invites parents of the participants on the last day of his workshop. He gives a glimpse of what their children learnt in the workshop by making them do it themselves too!

And every year, we have had demands from parents for a workshop for themselves. Ranga Shankara is happy to introduce this workshop in Summer Express 2009.
Become a child again to understand your children better!

About Bangalore Photography Club (BPC)
BPC started off in late 2004 with four people who met on a Yahoo group. By 2005, considering the enthusiasm in the group growing in number, it was envisioned that BPC could go long way in the field of photography. Group projects such as shoot-trips to nearby locations helped bring the members together as a team, rather than just online peers. Today, BPC is an association of more 800 members. This is an open forum where anyone could come up with ideas aligned with the vision of the club or to promote the club itself. ‘Frames of Mind’ is the annual photography exhibition which all members look forward to every year.

Rhythm makes music flow and rhythm makes the body move. Come and explore the world of rhythm with ‘Thappattam’, a folk dance of Tamil Nadu. The children will learn not only the basics about handling and playing a ‘Thappu’ [circular drum] but also learn to appreciate rhythm and its importance in theatre and their daily lives. The beats of the drum and the movements of the body meet in unison to become an expressive dance form. There is no end to innovation with this dance and musical form and one can create music even with stainless steel plates!
