Long long ago.. actually, not so long ago, there was a nice long road with huge trees on either side and students and elders alike used to cycle to their school/college/workplace. The same could be said about most of the roads in Bangalore until one fine day when the world realized what a ‘cool’ place Bangalore is and the rest is history.
Cliched as it may seem, a lot of people say Bangalore has gotten warmer in the last 10 years.
So, here’s our teeny weeny bit to reclaim the Bangalore that we know of. Join us as we spread the message of cycling in Bangalore.
This edition of Critical Mass is registered at UNEP as one of the World Environment Day activities. Watch this space for our event to be featured.

The Bangalore Astronomical Society plans to kickstart it’s new year (and the International Year of Astronomy too (IYA 2009)) with a star party under the skies @ Coorg (koDagu) this January.
While Jan 24th and 25th also happen to be closest to the new moon, Coorg as a place holds value of interest for things well beyond astronomy (For the adventure crazy, nature crazy amongst you).
The routine sky gazing, constellation tracing, deep sky observing apart, we also intend that this session be a productive brainstorming session for us, as to take astronomy to all the bangaloreans, with much spirit and enthusiasm in this year of astronomy, than ever before.
Logistics
* We intend to arrange a Tempo Traveller or a Swaraj Mazda for those amongst us who are looking to travel together, depending on the number of total registrants.
* We expect charges: For transport and stay (mandatory) to account to Rs 1000 + 500 = Rs 1500 approximately. Please note that this is approximate and might vary either way depending upon the final signup count)

The Tour of Nilgiris is a 7-day, 919-km bicycle ride across the famed Nilgiri mountain range in South India. The Tour of Nilgiris takes off from Bangalore on 25 December 2008 and ends on 1 January 2009. As the name suggests, it is a tour and not a race. On the tour you get to ride with 40 like-minded riders on what could be the journey of a lifetime.
The Tour of Nilgiris is the outcome of the desire of a very small group of cycling enthusiasts in Bangalore to create a challenging, interesting and educative ride for a holiday. The route they mapped for themselves was: Bangalore, Maddur, Mysore, Somwarpet, Mercara (Coorg), Virajpet, Sultan Batheri, Gudlur, Ooty, Coonoor, Kotagiri, Ooty, Sigurghat, Masinagudi, Bandipur, Gundalpet, Mysore, Bangalore (across the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala).

At 11 am, Lalbagh West Gate to Town Hall, 9th November 2008, Sunday
*Hasiru Usiru, *a network of community organisations, residents associations, project affected communities, voluntary organisations and individuals concerned about protecting equitable access to public social spaces such as roads and parks in Bengaluru, invite you to participate in a *Walk to Reclaim Bengaluru on November 9th 2008, at 11 am at Lalbagh West Gate*.
The key purpose is to highlight the extensive damage that road-widening and Metro projects are causing to the city, destroying in the process lives, livelihoods and thousands of trees. This walk is also to demand an inclusive planning process in shaping our city and ensuring that short-sighted, elite induced, infrastructure development, does not cause irreversible damage to the city and ruin the lives of thousands.
-
The Walk is to highlight that there are many progressive and intelligent solutions to the current problems of traffic congestion that do not involve destruction of thousands of trees, businesses and homes.
-
The Walk is to emphasise the importance of including public consultations as required by law in road widening and Metro construction proposals. (Currently, both projects are being rushed through in blatant violation of the Karnataka Town and Country Planning Act, amongst others.)
-
The Walk is to emphasise that the Metro is a solution that can work only if integrated with bus based transport modes. (Building an elevated Metro will certainly ruin the city forever.)
-
The Walk is to assert our right to participate in decision making relating to projects of our city.
To mobilise support for this Walk, we have developed a flyer and the same is attached.
Please feel free to print or forward the flyer and kindly use it in mobilizing the wide public to ensure maximum participation in the walk. You may also download b/w posters from the website: www.esgindia.org, print them on A-4 sheets and post them on your organisational and community notice boards.
Needless to state, we also request you to contribute to the expenses involved in this initiative. Hasiru Usiru members are keen to meet with your community or organisation and explain why this Walk is so necessary now. Please confirm if you would like one of the Hasiru Usiru **volunteers to meet with your community and make a presentation.
For details of participation or to make a donation please contact Nandini, Divya or Sharmila at Environment Support Group.
