SYNOPSIS
There is no form of protest stronger than silence. That is what this novel, authored by the Jnanpith Award winning writer U.R. Ananthamurthy conveys.
The protagonist, Kuppanna Bhatta, faces indignities heaped on him by fellow Brahmin and tormentor Appanna Bhatta, through the power of tolerance and silence. Appanna and Kuppanna are neighbours but bitter enemies. Kuppanna maintains complete silence even as the clash between the two men turns increasingly vitriolic. Appanna is unable to fathom Kuppanna?s silence and, in the end, he too rendered silent. But before this happens the story winds its way through various developments ? struggles, aspirations, anxieties, and agitation appear and disappear.
Amidst it all, two younger characters ? a boy and a girl ? try to bridge the gap between the two central characters. They represent a pleasant world, a hope of a better future, and end to the rancour.
